About This Fellowship

The Skoll Award for Social Innovation is one of the most significant prizes in the social entrepreneurship space. Established by Jeff Skoll, the first president of eBay, the Skoll Foundation invests in social entrepreneurs who have already demonstrated transformative impact and are poised to scale their solutions to reach millions more.

Unlike early-stage fellowships, the Skoll Award targets proven leaders whose organizations have moved beyond proof-of-concept to achieve measurable systems-level change. The $2 million unrestricted award — among the largest in the field — gives recipients the freedom to deploy capital where it will have the greatest impact, whether that means scaling operations, entering new markets, or investing in organizational capacity.

Recipients join the Skoll community, a carefully curated network of social entrepreneurs, impact investors, government leaders, and thought leaders. They are featured at the annual Skoll World Forum at Oxford University, one of the premier gatherings in social innovation. Past awardees include organizations like Kiva, Room to Read, Last Mile Health, and the International Rescue Committee's Airbel Impact Lab.

Selection Process

The Skoll Award selection process is designed to identify organizations at a tipping point — those with proven models ready for dramatic scale.

  • Organizations are identified through a combination of nominations and proactive research by the Skoll Foundation team
  • Initial screening evaluates the organization's theory of change, evidence of impact, and leadership quality
  • Due diligence includes site visits, financial review, and interviews with stakeholders and beneficiaries
  • An external review committee of experts evaluates finalists against the Foundation's criteria
  • Selection criteria: systems-changing approach, evidence of impact, potential for scale, and quality of leadership
  • Typically 3-6 awards are granted per year from a pool of hundreds of considered organizations
  • Awards are announced at the Skoll World Forum each spring
